Is Nintendo Wii The Best Game Console?

By Luke Beckham Since the day that the Nintendo Wii video game console was launched in the global market it has taken the planet by storm. At the beginning of September, Microsoft Xbox 360 handled more sales of units than Nintendo Wii but by October Nintendo Wii rapidly overtook Microsoft to attain the top spot with a staggering 519,000 units sold as opposed to a mere 366,000 sold by Microsoft Nevertheless in revenue terms Microsoft is ahead of Nintendo Wii with earnings of $354 million from sales of its video game console while Nintendo managed only $246 million for the Wii model and $116 million for the PS3.

Sony, the third main competitor has also performed to a high standard when it introduced its newer models. The Nintendo Wii faced supply problems to various parts of the world but managed to cope exceptionally well, under the circumstances, and even though the company can feel confident about the fact that the demand is higher than the supply, they are attempting to narrow the gap by discovering more ways to increase their current manufacturing capacity of 1.8 million units each month. The Nintendo Wii is becoming a serious player in the seventh generation gaming systems like Sony\'s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft\'s Xbox. Introduced as the successor of Nintendo GameCube this console has some great characteristics which have helped it to achieve the number one spot in the popularity stakes. The console has a powerful wireless controller along with a Wii remote that can be hand-held and used as a pointer. This device can sense an increase of speed in three proportions making your gaming practice as realistic as possible. When the console is in standby mode, you can receive updates from the internet via the WiiConnect24. At the E3 press conference in 2006 the Nintendo Wii received many rave reviews and awards and by December of the same year the console was launched in four key markets. By September 2007 the Financial Times had declared the Nintendo Wii as the market leader in its category. The monthly sales of this console are still higher than all its competitors today. In fact figures indicate that it has sold more units in the first half of 2007 within the United States, than Sony and Microsoft put together, not to mention Japan where it outsells the others by a ratio of 3:1 and 6:1 respectively on a weekly basis. Even in Australia the Microsoft Xbox 360 was replaced by Nintendo Wii in the top slot with the highest sales and today the console is the leader within whichever markets it has established itself. Reports suggest Nintendo has announced supplies will continue to be short throughout 2007. Sony and Microsoft are known to have experienced losses from selling their consoles but have high hopes of software sales turning the tide for them. However Nintendo declares that they have made the most of production costs and as a result are earning a good margin of profit on every single console sold to the public. Luke Beckham has been hooked on the Nintendo Wii since it\'s launch, and being a big fan of the Wii came with a nice big price tag as well. Games can get expensive, so be sure to check out how Luke was able to save hundreds of dollars by downloading Wii games online. Apple Pins Its Hopes on Gaming (1up.com)

Back when I was in college -- way back in early 1997, I'm afraid -- I wrote a well-reasoned letter to the online arm of Ultra Game Players magazine in defense of Nintendo, whose star was starting to take on a distinct tinge of tarnish among the nascent online hardcore gaming fanbase. The N64's strong launch had deteriorated into the likes of Yoshi's Story , with little but Star Fox ...
