Built for today’s multimedia-savvy, always on-the-go computer user, the entertainment-centric HP Pavilion dv2615us notebook PC provides quick access to your digital audio and video library wherever you roam. Weighing in at 5.4 pounds, it travels easily and it provides a cool, modern look with a high-gloss durable finish and inlaid design inspired by Zen rock gardens as well as touch-sensitive media controls. Latch-free, the mechanical closure, unique speaker grill pattern, and color-saturated LED indicator lights further enhance this sophisticated design. It offers a widescreen, BrightView 14.1-inch display, which provides improved viewing in direct sunlight. Control settings for audio and video playback from up to 10 feet away with the included HP remote, then store it conveniently in the PC card slot. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process).

This notebook is powered by the 1.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power–so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. It includes Intel’s 4965 AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. Other features include a large 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), multi-format/dual-layer LightScribe DVD drive (which can also burn CDs), Intel GMA X3100 video card with up to 251 MB of shared video memory, Bluetooth connectivity, multi-format memory card reader, and integrated Webcam for easy video conferencing.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you’ll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor has a 1.5 GHz processor speed, fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system’s performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It’s optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications–such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications–while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data–akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (2 x 512 MB DDR2) is a good start, but you’ll want to add more RAM to handle today’s demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It provides two DIMM slots and has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label–anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).

Screen, Video & Audio
While this notebook is actually as wide as standard 15-inch displays, the high-definition, widescreen 14.1-inch display (1280 x 800-pixel resolution) has the same form factor as a 12-inch screen–taking up less space on your desk. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 251 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance–delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You’ll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 4965 AGN LAN chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It’s also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range–great for closed office environments).

With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which includes both super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals–from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
  • 2 headphone jacks
  • 1 microphone jack
  • 1 Expansion Port 3 connector (for use with the HP xb3000 Expansion Base or the HP Notebook QuickDock)
  • 1 IR receiver
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family’s use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

Customer Review: Unreliable product with atrociously poor support
9 months after I bought a HP Pavilion Notebook DV6208NR, the motherboard malfunctioned. I sent the notebook to be serviced. It did not boot up when I received it. I had to wait again on the phone to be guided on how to boot up. One month later, the notebook crashed, and I had to send it in a second time. Here it is sitting on my desk and failing to boot up. Do not buy HP notebooks. They are unreliable, and the technical support is atrociously poor.
Customer Review: Poor customer service
I have this laptop for just over a year. The 12-cell battery could not hold any charge — 0%. HP customer service was not effective in handling defective product.

Customer Review: Sloppy technology
I bought TomTom 710 four months ago and used it frequently. It mainly takes you to the address, but the map is definitely not up-to-date in UK roads without knowledge in some roundabouts and one-direction streets. I have had not only embarassing (late from court ending up to god knows where), but several dangerous situations nad misleadings during this time. For up-dating the map I contacted TomTom service months ago, but never got reply. Yesterday I tried to up-date the unit and it died out. Now the screen gleams dark grey non-existence and nothing brings it back.
Customer Review: Good product, ruined by shoddy and worthless customer service
The Tom Tom user interface is very good, and mostly intuitive. Display maps are clear, and map directions and ‘next manoeuvre’ instructions are easy to read at a glance, which is essential when on the road. The display is also highly configurable, and the touch-sensitive screen gives easy and rapid access to the most commonly needed features, such as setting the home destination or other freqently-visited locations. Route planning warns of toll charge roads, and give the opportunity to route around them. The Tom Tom 700 loses signal disturbingly frequently. Cars fitted with heat reflective windscreens need an expensive optional external antenna, or the Tom Tom 700 will be unable to acquire a satellite signal. The mounting kit is clumsy and awkward to adjust once mounted, and the suction cup which holds it to the windscreen or other suitable surface is prone to snapping irreparably off. The Points Of Interest feature is limited in value: for example it could not identify any ice rinks in Surrey, but offered Sweden as among the nearest. The supplied maps, however, were significantly out of date with current road build, sometimes leading to navigation instructions that would be highly dangerous to follow. Stretches of motorway, roundabouts, and road layout changes, which in many cases I know have been in place for several years, were unknown to my Tom Tom as recently as a few months ago. Sometimes, when travelling at speed along a straight stretch of motorway with no junctions for miles, it would announce “after eighty yards, turn sharp left”. Tom Tom Support told me that because my device’s maps were out of date at the time I bought it, I was entitled to a one-off free update, beyond which further updates are bought online from their web site. When I tried to get the update, however, Tom Tom Support reneged, and would not honour it, insisting that all updates should now be paid for regardless. Map updates are very expensive, and that supplied on my Tom Tom was not fit for purpose. There were so many navigation errors, with the Tom Tom often finding itself seemingly in the middle of a field frantically recalculating and changing direction through 360 degrees in two second intervals that it was rendered unreliable. Tom Tom customer service didn’t care. This left me with a product that was both unreliable and essentially unsupported. There is a sound adage, well understood by more mature commercial organisations, that the point at which you are faced with a customer with a complaint is the best opportunity you will ever have to create a loyal customer. Tom Tom fought hard to ward off my repeat custom, and succeeded in losing a customer, and their good report, which would have cost them precisely nothing to keep. Dealing with Tom Tom Customer Service proved a deeply unpleasant experience. I have since registered a complaint with Trading Standards. Do be aware if you are considering this company’s products, that the widespread accounts of third-rate and shoddy Tom Tom customer service are not a myth. Tom Tom customer service is grossly sub-standard and unhelpful, to the point of being starkly customer-hostile: intransigent, unco-operative, with sometimes illiterate e-mail responses, refusing to help but with cheerfully fake little boilerplate mottos like “Thank you for allowing us to be of service to you” bolted on to the end. Ignore any thoughts of customer service with this product - they will certainly ignore you. I swapped my Tom Tom for a Garmin Nuvi, and it has worked flawlessly. The Garmin maps are right up to date, and it never loses signal, even in a car with heat reflective windscreens. I should have listened earlier to the warnings I had from several colleagues, who reported similar experiences with Tom Tom.

Customer Review: Almost perfect except for that keyboard…..
First, here’s what was done right. I can put the power cord in my pocket. No laptop carrying case necessary. This is brilliant. Ctrl+Alt+T pops up console, and KDE’s “konsole” program is just one command away. 80% of my time on this machine is spent using this one program. It works perfectly out of the box. Firefox (including all of the plugins I usually have to install manually) Just Works. Wireless comes very close to “Just Works”. The simple connection software doesn’t track wep keys per connection (that I’ve been able to figure out), and there are a few UI issues. But “/etc/init.d/network restart” works as well as it always did. The screen? It’s small. It doesn’t work well for google maps. It works fine for everything else. In short, this is a really, really impressive laptop. And it has a bash shell. That’s about all I need. Now let’s talk about the keyboard. It’s small. That’s fine, I have small fingers. Evidently, my typing style is such that I never use the right shift key, so that hasn’t bothered me either. The frustration comes from being able to hit a key (the worst offender is ‘n’), feel it go all the way down, and not have anything happen. This only happens when coming in from the corner instead of directly on the middle of the key, and doesn’t happen all of the time. But it happens often enough to really slow me down as a typist. All of this may seem a little unfair — this machine wasn’t designed for 10-hour coding sessions, but that’s what I use it for. My error rate is (slowly) going down, and perhaps after a few iterations there will be a model with the smaller equivalent of the Dell QuietKey. Until then, I’m keeping this one and (mostly) loving it, but I’m very reluctant to recommend it to anyone else who would be doing any serious typing on it. If you’re looking for a computer to do mostly quick web browsing and email, this is just about perfect.
Customer Review: Sleep mode useless
There’s plenty of good features to this laptop as you can see from the other reviews. It has, however two flaws that you should know about: 1. the right shift key is in a non standard place 2. the sleep mode is basically useless - the laptop uses too much energy when it’s in sleep mode so it will shutdown (without closing programs) in just a few hours. the shift key issue can be fixed - google asus eee users forum for details the sleep mode problem is a deal breaker for me.

TomTom presents the new and improved version of its Go 510 with the TomTom Go 720. Its 4.3? screen is larger than the 4? screen on the 510, and this GPS is one of the first to incorporate voice recognition technology. The TomTom Go 720 will record your voice and give you the answers to your vocal navigation queries while you’re on the road. You?ll be able to ask your GPS to calculate the shortest or quickest itinerary between points A and B, and you can even confirm or cancel a request, all with your own voice. This GPS allows you to save step-by-step instructions of your itinerary, and you can choose between pre-recorded voices, the voice of a family member or your own voice to guide you as you travel. With a never-before-seen graphics interface, this GPS gives a sleek look to its maps and shows building contours. The TomTom Go 720 has several points of interest and lists the positions of fixed speed cameras in its memory. Completely customisable, this GPS can even save your own points of interest, addresses or personal notes along the road or itinerary. The MAPSHARE function lets you modify the maps that are stored in the GPS memory. You can change the street names, direction of traffic and other elements, and send them to the TomTom community by connecting your GPS to your computer. TomTom users can receive new updates this way, whenever they choose. In addition, this GPS includes a help menu to give you a hand in case of problems or unexpected situations. You?ll also find a direct-access Bluetooth-telephone function with listings of the nearest police stations or hospitals. The innovations don?t stop with the GPS functions, as they?re also present in terms of design. The TomTom Go 720 includes aluminium inserts for a comfortable touch and feel, and complete discretion when it’s on your windscreen. Plus, the TomTom Go 720 offers a number of handy functions, such as an MP3 player, photo viewer and an in-built FM transmitter, so you can l

Customer Review: A solid and reliable performer with lots of features
My first Sat Nav was an integrated NavTech system and its wasn’t a patch on my TomTom Go 720. I have used TomTom GO 720 in the UK, Spain and France and also played with the GO 520 and 920. As far as the 720 is concerned I can’t think of any major faults and even though it has some niggles I wouldn’t be without it and it is fully recommended, in fact I would recommend the entire GO range. However only buy the 920 if you need worldwide maps as the additional features aren’t that impressive for the extra money. Build Quality : Well built but quite bulky but as it is purely for use in the car this isn’t a problem. The sound is clear and can be set to automatically adjust to the ambient noise level. The windscreen cradle is well made and durable and although connecting it to TomTom is ok it is a bit clunky and fragile. One little niggle is the on/off button which seems to have a mind of its own and can take any random time to activate from a short press to a long five second press. The display is large bright and clear and the colour scheme is fully configurable. Reliability and accuracy: Like all Sat navs it does get confused now and again, but it is rare and I generally have faith in its advice. Some sat navs seem to be shy of using minor roads when routing but TomTom uses them very effectively. When entering an address TomTom does not currently support postal or zip codes in other European countries and I would have found this useful. The voice commands are clear and precise. Software: The touch screen interface is very easy to use but make sure you have the latest software version as the new version has a lot more features. This can be downloaded after purchase. I requested an update to the maps but I have been told that I have the latest version, in which case there are a few areas where TomTom thinks you are having an off-road experience because of changes in the road system. An advantage to TomTom GO as opposed to TomTom ONE is that the European map is combined into one map whereas on cheaper TomToms’ you have to select the map that you require. Battery life: Sort of irrelevant as I always use the supplied cable for use in the car’s 12 volt socket. Reception: Can take up to 30 seconds to lock on to the signal but once it has got it there isn’t a problem. Memory: Once everything is loaded you don’t have a lot of memory to play with. I have around 14 Mb and I can have problems uploading large upgrades to the software. To help I have deleted lots of things that I don’t use such as most of the voices and the speed cameras in Belgium. I am not sure if you can buy a 2Gbyte card for TomTom but I think it should be sold with a larger memory card. PC Software: Early versions of TomTom Home (the program that sits on your PC and enables you to do updates) weren’t that good at updating so make sure you have the latest version. However all versions install easily and connection to TomTom is reliable. Other Features used: The blue tooth connection works well. Hands free works well but you can only have one phone connected at anyone time. There are many other features including a traffic information service that can be connected via Bluetooth from your mobile. Note that the 720 is not an MP3 player and one of my friends has the 920, which is, but even so it isn’t really a replacement for an in car music system so it is a bit of a gadget. Finally, from my own experience and that of friends, don’t buy an expensive in car system as TomTom seems to whip them all for much less money.
Customer Review: TomTom Good - Mapshare Bad
I purchased the TT720 at Xmas and was very happy with the functionality - especially the FM transmitter for music. The major disappointment for me is the shockingly poor software bundled with the unit. Out of the box the docking station and software refuse to work. Downloading the free updates moves this forward but the software is very ‘buggy’ and the very latest update freezes my PC completely. The net result of this is the mapshare functionality does not work so updating known errors (such as 60mph sections of the M6) is impossible and the unit sends me down A-roads instead. The TomTom web site has also proved a hit and miss affair. The in-built speaker for phone calls is also a little quiet (the phonecall cannot be routed via the FM transmitter) So in summary TomTom720 good - but would be better if the advertised mapshare functionality actually worked - I’m sure TomTom will sort this out in time but keep your money in your pocket until they do.
