Customer Review: Sony VAIO VGN-AR650U 17″ Laptop
I received the Sony Laptop for my Christmas present. I love it. It replaced a very old laptop. The operating system — Windows Vista Premium– has worked without any problems. I turned it on, and it found the wireless connection right away. If you check around you will have a hard time finding another laptop for this price that offers the hard drive size and accessories this one offers. I love the HDMI connection; I can connect it to our TV and watch the items I have selected on my laptop on the TV. It’s great for any TV shows you are downloading from the internet. You can also watch movies on your TV that you are playing from the DVD Drive.
Customer Review: Great core/features, needs fine tuning
First, I will ignore all aspects Vista related. This Vaio has some nice power, a good feature set, and is one of the cheaper 17″ that comes with an HDMI (an awesome feature if u download movies or have an hdtv. However, its needs a serious run through on the physical design, especially around the keyboard. The keyboard looks like it belongs on a 12 inch top. though the actual buttons are large, there poorly spaced and arranged. The entire keyboard has sooo much room around the edges that it begs the question “why didn’t they use this space for the keyboard?”. The pros: Excellent speed/cost ratio Beautiful screen and 1080 HD HDMI The Cons: The keyboard is TINY considering the real estate they could have used. The screen is so heavy, it requires one hand to hold the bottom down, while the other lifts the screen up. The screen has a 1 inch black bar all the way around that increases the overall size of the laptop. I gave this 3 stars because it really has some nice potential, and any person who spends five minutes with it can see that it would be greatly improved with some minor changes. But, its been reliable for me, powerful, and came at a good price. In the end, you could do worse.

Customer Review: Good but not perfect
Everything works as specified but… 1. DVD drive is noisy when playing and recording, I can sometimes hear the motor noise over quiet parts in a film which is annoying. 2. The layer change pause on purchased films is very long, much worse than my older Sony DVD player. 3. On screen menus and graphics are not consistent between all features, it appears Panasonic have thrown together the software from some of their other products into this box. 4. The DTT guide has no search. 5. Remote control could be simpler, several buttons have very similar functions.
Customer Review: disappointing …
Already have a Panasonic hard-drive dvd recorder (EX75)downstairs, and it’s superb. I bought the EZ47 for the bedroom, and also because I wanted to transfer some of my videos onto dvd. Disappointed for 2 reasons: 1. It suddenly bursts into life in the middle of the night, whirring away for several seconds and waking us both up. I can’t find any apparent reason for this. 2. Although it boasts no loss of picture quality when transferring from video onto dvd, the fact is that if you watch any video on a lovely new flatscreen tv - the picture quality is rubbish anyway. The dvd copies are therefore rubbish as well. I hadn’t realised this before, having only watched dvds on the flatscreen. Video is very old-tec now,and doesn’t stand up to the new tv technology. This copying function was therefore a waste of time for me, as video-quality film is unwatchable on my telly.

Named for an exotic African wood, this Wenge VAIO NR notebook features a dark, rich brown color with subtle copper accents that shine through in angled light. The widescreen 15.4-inch screen makes it easy to multitask in several open windows, or watch a DVD in its proper aspect ratio. And Sony’s original XBRITE-ECO LCD technology delivers razor-sharp details and crisp, bold colors–all while conserving battery life. This notebook is powered by the 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 dual-core processor and it comes with 1 GB of installed RAM (which can be increased to a maximum of 2 GB). Other features include a 120 GB hard drive, 54g Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), multi-format/dual-layer DVD?RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard 34 slot, and both Memory Stick and SD memory cart slots.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you’ll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The 1.46 GHz Intel Pentium T2310 dual-core processor delivers additional computing resources and help expand the PC’s capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing. You’ll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. Each core shares 1 MB of L2 cache, and they have a 533 MHz front-side bus. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system’s performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
  • Hard Drive: The 120 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 20,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data–akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 1 GB of installed DDR2 RAM (PC4200, 2 x 512 MB DDR2, 533 MHz) is a good start, but you’ll want to maximize the 2 GB RAM capacity to handle hungry productivity software and demanding multimedia. Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data–great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

You’ll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition screen, with its 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. The XBRITE-ECO technology delivers brilliant colors and stunning clarity with efficient power usage, and it features an anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection and ensure a beautifully clear image from any viewing angle.

Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 251 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance–delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

Customer Review: STAY AWAY FROM VAIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! +1
Glenn Skow’s post is correct. This problems goes a looong way back and they haven’t(refuse to) corrected it yet. This problem exist with Vaio P4 or other models of VAIO. Yeah, it’s the soldering problem with the SODIMM memory banks which gets broken w/ mobo over time. When that happens, you won’t be able to use the laptop. Sony continues to ignore the problems and pass it on to your pocketbook.
Customer Review: STAY AWAY FROM VAIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please be aware that there is a known defect in the Vaio line. I personally have had direct experience with this having my Vaio die on me as a result of a “cracked motherboard” only 14 months of having it. It is a known defect in the Vaio design. I urge anyone who reads this to be very catious about buying a Vaio and consider an alternative, more reliable computer. “The issue stems from the memory SODIMM slots. The solder joints that connect the SODIMM’s to the motherboard are breaking, causing one or both memory modules not to be polled, or counted, towards total system memory…Sony than charges $700-$1200 to repair it”

Customer Review: An Excellent TV.
After a long time I decided on the Sony 46″, the price was very good, It was ?400 more expensive on the Sony site and ?300 more from the larger out of town stores, plus Amazon were offering a DVD recorder for free, an amazing deal.

It took Amazon only 3 days to deliver, phoned with a time 2 hour time slot, and the TV was delivered by two very professional carriers who were very friendly and very helpful and delevery was made in the two hour slot.

I worked for one of the large out of town stores in a management position and never delivered that good a service.

The TV is everything that you would expect from a Sony TV, Excellent picture, good features and it looks fantastic.

A five star TV with a five star service, the best I have received from any company.

Customer Review: Who needs 1080p when your tv’s as good as this!!
So where to Start?? Wll i’d been researching tv’s looking at getting a great tv to compliment my collection of consoles and sky hd. I came across this one and at the price i thought what the hell give it a go. Honestly you will not be dissapointed in this set!! It is Excellent. only small niggle is SD Signal quality but that is still well above par or the Size of the tv. Also It’s the signals fault and not the Tv’s!! I also got the DVD recorder included in the price!! What a deal - the tv sells for over 1500 pounds in high street stores alone! I paid ?999 for the TV and DVD recorder. The price has gone up since but I would still reccomend you to buy this TV even at the higher price!!
You Will Not Regret it!! especially if you have a PS3 or Xbox 360 they look absolutey brilliant!!.

Sony VAIO VGN-UX490N/C 4.5″ Laptop (Intel Core2 Solo U2200 Processor, 1GB RAM, 48GB Flash Drive, Vista Business)
Featuring cutting-edge flash memory, the black Sony VAIO VGN-UX490N/C Micro PC is an ultra-portable, full-functioning PC small enough to fit in your pocket. Taking the PC to the next level, the UX490N/C stores data on 48 MB of solid state flash memory, instead of a traditional spinning disc drive. Weighing just over a pound and measuring 5.9 by 3.75 inches, it easily fits in the palm of your hand. The UX490N/C features a 4.5-inch widescreen SVGA screen that ingeniously slides up to expose an integrated keyboard. The pocket-sized UX490N/C comes equipped with a stylus and Sony’s VAIO touch launcher for quick access to functions frequently used such as Internet access, e-mail, various computer applications, games and music. Just push the launcher button located on the side of the unit.

It’s powered by Windows Vista Business and Intel’s newest Core 2 Solo U2200 processor with ultra-low voltage for extended battery life. Advanced wireless capabilities are built right in–including tri-mode Wi-Fi, WWAN, WLAN, and Bluetooth–and expansion is a breeze with the included port replicator. It even includes two built-in cameras–one on the front (0.3 megapixels) for VoIP tele/videoconferencing and the other (1.3 megapixels) on the back for taking snapshots. Other technical features include a 1 GB of RAM, a Memory Stick slot, and a full complement of pre-installed software (from Internet security to Microsoft Works). For added convenience, a docking station with three 2.0 USB ports, Ethernet, VGA, iLink (FireWire/IEEE-1394) interface and an AV output comes with the unit, making it easy to connect to peripherals like a full-sized keyboard, display and speakers when back in the office or at home.

Advanced Wireless Mobility
The UX490N/C features Sony’s SmartWi technology, which seamlessly integrates wireless Wide Area Network (WAN), 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN and Bluetooth technologies, enabling you to toggle among your wireless connectivity options depending on your surroundings. The tri-mode wireless LAN is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range–great for closed office environments). The integrated wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) technology lets you access the AT&T Wireless EDGE network to extend your wireless coverage beyond LAN access networks and hotspots (an AT&T SIM card is included; see more about WWANs below). And with the Bluetooth wireless connectivity, you can synchronize and transfer files between the PC and peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs.

Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN)
If you’re the ultimate road warrior, you need to access the Internet and check e-mail without having to plug in your Sony Vaio notebook PC, and without cables to boot. Welcome to the world of WWANs (wireless wide area networks). With WWANs, you can access critical network resources and home office files from the front seat of your car, the airport, the local coffee shop, or your recliner at home. Sony Vaio computers use SmartWi technology to access the AT&T Wireless national EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) network.

A WWAN uses long-range wireless connections — the same networks as cellular phones — to provide access across a large geographic area. In comparison, a WLAN (wireless LAN) covers only one or more buildings located close together. The use of wireless connectivity on a WLAN is simply an alternative to the PSTN (public switched telephone network), which you may have used — or still use — to dial into your ISP (Internet service provider) or reach your company’s network. On a WWAN, however, you use wireless connectivity to reach your carrier’s data network instead of plugging into a phone jack and dialing into your ISP. Each mobile device communicates with the public carrier’s base station, providing coverage across entire states, regions, and countries via cell phone towers.

Security & Safety Features
Sony’s line of Vaio UX micro-PCs take security seriously, employing a biometric fingerprint sensor and proprietary hard disk drive protection software to ensure your data is protected from unauthorized use as well as accidental damage. Fingerprint biometrics is a convenient and secure way to protect your computer and the information on it with a simple swipe of your finger. It also stores passwords to secure web sites you visit, so authentication and access are quick and easy–you only need your fingerprint.

The Basics

  • Processor: Offering the latest in ultra-low voltage processing power, the single-core Intel Core 2 Solo U2200 processor has a has a power consumption rating of just 5 watts and a 1.2 GHz speed that’s paired with a fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system’s performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) The Core 2 Solo processor delivers enhanced performance for today’s demanding applications such as CAD tools, 3-D and 2-D modeling, video editing, digital music, digital photography and gaming. And Intel’s Smart Cache technology enables smarter, more efficient cache and bus design for enhanced performance, responsiveness and power savings.
  • Hard Drive: The 48 GB of flash memory (NAND) storage is on the small side when compared to traditional notebooks, but it is understandable in such a small package. Faster and more reliable, flash memory provides a rapid boot-up and quicker access to applications while improving battery life. Flash memory is also more reliable than hard disk memory, mainly because there are no moving parts. Since data is written to stationary flash memory instead of a spinning hard disk, you have less risk of hardware problems with the hard disk when you’re on the move.
  • Memory: It’s loaded with 1 GB of 400 MHz, PC-3200 DDR2 RAM. On the downside, that’s the maximum that the UX490N/C will accept, so you won’t be able to upgrade.
  • CD/DVD Drive: This Micro PC does not come with an integrated optical drive, but Sony offers an optional, external multi-format DVD burner (VGP-DDRW4).
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The hidden keyboard has 64 keys with a 0.15mm stroke and 8.6mm pitch.

Screen, Video & Audio
The UX490N/C’s wide, touchscreen 4.5-inch XBRITE LCD has a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution (SVGA) and includes control buttons for zooming, scrolling, and a stick pointer, as well as the ability to view in either landscape or portrait orientations. The high brightness level of an XBRITE display means that black tones appear richer and deeper while white tones remain brighter. Graphics and text display clearly and colors appear more lifelike. This Micro PC includes a built-in monaural speaker and is compatible with the Windows sound system. Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, which uses Intel Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT) and provides up to 251 MB of shared video memory.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
The UX490N/C has a single USB 2.0 port, headphone and microphone jacks, Memory Stick slot (compatible with Memory Stick DUO and MagicGate functionality), and a port replicator connection. The included port replicator offers three USB 2.0, one 4-pinFireWire, VGA out, composite A/V out, and Ethernet (10Base-T/100Base-TX) connections.

Operating System
The Windows Vista Business operating system is designed to meet the needs of business organizations of all sizes. For small businesses, Windows Vista Business will help keep PCs running smoothly and more securely so you will be less reliant on dedicated IT support. For larger organizations, Windows Vista Business provides dramatic new infrastructure improvements, enabling your IT staff to spend less time focused on the day-to-day maintenance of PCs. An array of sophisticated new backup technologies helps protect your information even in the event of a catastrophic hardware failure. And Windows Vista Business has a new user interface, named Windows Aero, which is designed to deliver new levels of efficiency for any business user. This new interface makes it easy to navigate through the operating system and from application to application. For instance, Windows Aero helps you juggle multiple tasks at once by providing a three-dimensional, real-time, animated view of all your open applications and documents.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family’s use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

Preloaded Software
Includes Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office 2007 Student and Teacher Edition (60-day trial), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007 (with 60 days of Live Update).

Dimensions and Weight
Amazingly small, the UX490N/C measures 5.9 x 3.75 x 1.5 inches (WxHxD) and weighs just 1.2 pounds with the included standard battery.

Power
It comes with the standard VGP-BPS6 standard capacity lithium ion battery, which provides between 1.5 and 3.5 hours of power (depending on usage). The optional large capacity VGP-BPL6 battery can power the UX490N/C for up to 7 hours.

It’s optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications–such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications–while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The 200 GB Serial ATA hard drive is about double the average size for notebook PCs, however its 4200 RPM speed is a bit slower than current standard hard drives. It provides more than enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and video editing software. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data–akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1 GB DDR2, PC5300) is an excellent start, but you’ll want to add more RAM to handle today’s demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It provides two DIMM slots and has a large 4 GB maximum RAM capacity. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 82-key keyboard (2.0mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad.

Screen, Video & Audio
The 15.4-inch WXGA LCD offers Sony’s XBRITE-ECO display technology and has a widescreen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The XBRITE-ECO technology delivers brilliant colors and stunning clarity with efficient power usage, and it features an anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection and ensure a beautifully clear image from any viewing angle. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 358 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965 AGN LAN chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It’s also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range–great for closed office environments).

This notebook also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here’s the full list of connectivity options:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals–from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 ExpressCard 34
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
  • Memory Stick slot (supports optional Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, and Memory Stick DUO media)
  • Secure Digital memory card slot (also compatible with MMC cards)

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.

Customer Review: I’m not a computer Geek, but I love this laptop!
I purchased a VAIO laptop two years ago. I still haven’t had any problems with it. I just purchased my husband this VAIO for Christmas, and he loves it! User friendly, perfect size. The only thing I DON’T like is all the pre-loaded promotional ware (Spiderman trailer, etc) but one can easily delete all that. Another bonus of buying this from Amazon is you don’t pay sales tax! Now THAT’S awesome! :)
Customer Review: Great Laptop for a reasonable price
I just received it yesterday, so my review may need some updates later. 1st - it took me couple hours to remove everything that was preinstalled on this laptop by Sony. After I removed all unwanted software, the laptop became noticeably faster. 2nd - DVD drive did not work and I found some more people complaining about this issue online. I contacted Sony customer service online and they provided me with the instructions how to fix this issue (it took 5min to make some changes in the registry). Overall, I would give 5 stars, however, because of the issues mentioned above, I’m giving it 4 stars.

Customer Review: An extremely happy customer
I ordered this little beauty on Monday and it arrived two days later, as promised. I have a Mac and was a bit worried about compatibility. It took me about 5 minutes of trying to figure out how it worked but suddenly I realised it was all a lot more simple than I thought. Just a case of dragging files on to its icon. I’m so happy with it I’m going to get another one!
Customer Review: Cool
How can you enjoy music for less money? what a bargain. Amazon delivered with 2 days for free, the player works great and comes complete with all parts, software, battery and head phones, the sound quality is good and the battery lasts for the time amazon states around 8-10 hours. The voice recorder is fun and a complete bonus, just think about it you can buy 3 units for ?15 you get free delivery, how cool is that.

An excellent device, but a few days after the 12 months warranty ran out the thing stopped working - lights out; not even visible as a USB memory device.
Customer Review: Good while it lasted
I bought mine 8 months ago. I left it charging for a couple of hours recently and later found that it wouldn’t switch on - it seems to have died :-( Good points were: * Good radio reception * Good sound quality * Quite easy to use, with plenty of control over the sound * Can be used as a USB flash drive for files as well as music * Very small Bad points: * It failed after 8 months! * USB transfers were relatively slow compared to other flash drives etc. * Supplied headphones are quite poor

TomTom Go 910 GPS Satellite Navigation Unit With Worldwide Mapping
TomTom GO 910
Used Price: ?194.96
Customer Review: Not as good as expected
I bought my Tom Tom 910 9 months ago with the RDS-TMS Traffic Receiver, as I travel around the UK and Europe on business and needed to improve my travel times by using the best route and missing the jams. It found some new routes to get to some customers, so was quite useful a couple of times, and the display of the ETA helps in planning journeys and letting people know when you are going to arrive. The spoken instructions are good, as you don’t have to look at the screen too often. The database of companies only seemed to include branches of Boots and Waitrose, so is not much good for searching for my customers, although post codes are generally accurate. The system falls down when the destination is on an industrial estate. Either the road names do not appear on the map, or the post code takes you to the nearest point on the main road (better than nothing I suppose). The traffic receiver is almost useless. Either it diverts you because of a traffic jam which doesn’t exist, or you end up at the back of a queue that you weren’t told about, or it loses the signal and takes a long time to retune! I cannot think of a single occasion where it was helpful. It has now stopped working so I don’t plug it in anymore. Bearing in mind that maps change all the time, I cannot believe that you cannot get sensible upgrades when things change. When downloading new software, or after a backup there is an annoying tendency for the 910 to lock up, so you have to push the ‘reset’ button. This is a tiny, almost invisible switch, so you need to have a pin or a staple handy. There are lots of places selling these so it pays to shop around. Searching on the internet can get you a decent price. Overall I am not as impressed as I expected to be.
Customer Review: Awful Support - Do Not Buy TomTom
I know this model has now been superseded but thought I’d share my experience. Have had mine for 16 months. When working does the basics well. Major problems with reliability & technical support. Took eight weeks in 2006 to get the Traffic Service registered so that it worked - I had to write to the CEO to get the problem elevated to someone who knew what they were doing - then sorted out in a couple of days. The device has gone through a long period of intermittent operation - both the car & desk mount were replaced but didn’t resolve. Device then failed completely & has been out of action for over 2 months. The main board was replaced but on return the maps wouldn’t register which sent support into several weeks of radio silence. Elevated the complaint got new maps which appear to work but device now turns itself on & off every couple of minutes. This is the most unreliable & poorly supported product I have ever owned. I gauge it has only worked satisfactorily for 60% of the time I have owned it. If not sorted in the next couple of weeks I intend to cut my losses by returning it to the retailer (not Amazon) for as much compensation as I can get & buy a Garmin which is a company which is well established in GPS via the marine market. The traffic function is hopeless - fundamentally flawed as a concept so not a problem specific to this model. Get a good data feed via Bluetooth/ mobile but: hold-ups are not cleared from the database quickly - they have been known to sit on it for 24 hours on occasions. The fundamental problem is that there is no forecasting of how long delays will persist. Around the M25 for example usually they have dispersed by the time one arrives with effective alternative route often not available. I ignore the TomTom warnings. use the radio & have not been caught out yet. I would not subscribe to a traffic service again until the these issues are addressed.

Pure Pocket DAB 2000 Portable DAB/FM Radio & MP3 Player
Used Price: ?80.00
Customer Review: Shoddy, considering the price
I’ve had my DAB 2000 for about a year now: the battery compartment cover falls off, the mains input/battery charger doesn’t work anymore and the earphone jack socket keeps cutting out. For the price, the finish can only be described as shoddy. I have two other Pure DAB products, and the pocket radio just doesn’t live up to the otherwise high Pure standards.
Customer Review: Very disappointing product from a respected maker
Waited excitedly for weeks for this product and was so dismayed when I unpacked it, I immediately repacked it and sold it on ebay (couldn’t rtn it). It felt extremely cheap for the price with its silver plastic finish, and can hardly be called pocket sized. It amazes me that personal DABs from Pure have to be so big - enormous compared to an iPod. I cant comment on the performance as I never started it up, but one of the issues with DAB is that the signal can fall out suddenly unlike analogue which gradually fails. I am not surprised if Pure have discontinued this disappointing product as it muddies up the rest of their otherwise excellent range. I may consider the replacement to this if they can make it smaller

Customer Review: Get one in time for Christmas!!
I got mine just the other day and have to say I’m blown away, I cannot fault it personally it’s just a great display. Sony seem to be the leaders in the market at the moment and if you’re on the look out for a new TV you’ll not go far wrong with one of these!

Customer Review: Great TV…… but no added extras?
I bought this TV for me room, since I only have a very small amount of wall space. Having read the reviews, this one was the best one out of the whole 20″ range on Amazon.

The picture is brilliant. Even for a small screen size, details are still clearly seen. Sound quality is really good too. I also like the function on the remote control of switching between analogue TV and digital TV.

What I was a little disappointed with was that there was no sleep timer. I do often fall asleep with the TV on, but there is no function for the TV to turn itself off after a while either. Subtitles are hard to get to. No easy on/off button. You have to scroll though 4 pages of set up options. Im not hard of hearing, but I am considerate of others. Late night TV watching in my house wake everyone else up. It just really bugs me that I have to spend 45 seconds messing about with the remote, where on most TV’s and digi boxes, there is one simple button.

Apart from that this is a FANTASTIC tv. It was all agreed in my house that mine is the best. (I often come home and find people sitting on the floor on my room watching something)

If you want a great TV, and are not bothered about the things I mentioned, then this is it.

(it has two scart sockets too! Enough for a DVD player and a Nintendo Wii)

Mustek R580 DVD +R/RW Recorder
Customer Review: Good Unit but poor Support
The record quality is very good with 5 quality options. To get a 2 hour film onto a 4.7gb DVD the quality setting needs to be on SP (The middle setting) and the reproduction is as good, if not better than the original. The 80Gb Hard drive is ample for fast recording and transfer to DVD, but if you are looking for a unit to store your favorite films on, look for one with a larger hard drive. The control facilities are better than some DVD players, they include Fast forward up to 80x and fast backwards also. The audio is supoosed to be 5.1 but my particular machine has an audio problem. I get sound for around 1 hour after power up and then it disappears until disconnected from the power for 1 hour. I have contacted Mustek and they have told me to return it to the factory at my own expense for assesment and to include the purchase receipt. This was a Christmas gift so I have no receipt. I will probably scrap this and Buy a Panasonic or something that has a better after sales service. A pity because all round the machine it self is well worth owning as long as there are no manufacturing faults with it.
Customer Review: Cheap and cheerful HDD/DVD recorder
It’s an HDD recorder, it’s a DVD recorder, and right now, it’s 120 quid. That’s a pretty tempting proposition. But the example that I bought has had a few problems. On my old TV, I had a lot of trouble with crackly sound (only from this player, not from any other source) though since changing TV’s, the problem has gone away. More annoyingly, the discs that this player was burning all had CRC errors on them, making them impossible to edit on the PC. I’ve downloaded and installed a firmware update from Mustek’s website, and (touch wood) that issue seems to have been resolved. Be aware that firmware upgrades are not without risk, and Mustek’s website expressly says that any units which die during a firmware upgrade will not be covered by their warranty. The interface is pretty clunky. Many of the buttons won’t do what you’d expect them to when you’d expect them to. For example if you stop the DVD disc and try to switch to HDD it won’t let you. You have to have pressed stop twice before it will let you switch. This can all get pretty frustrating, and I wouldn’t expect anyone who’s not ‘technically savvy’ to be able to get to grips with it. If you’re expecting to record stuff to HDD then edit onto DVD (cutting out the adverts for example) then be prepared for a disappointment. This unit is nowhere near that clever. Dubbing from HDD to DVD is really just a straight copy. If you want to do anything clever with the results, then you’ll need to manipulate it on your PC afterwards using the likes of VobBlanker and DVDShrink. If your budget will stretch, then buy a better model. If it won’t, and you don’t mind odd quirks and firmware upgrades, then this unit is a lot better thn nothing at all.

Customer Review: great recorder ….BUT
I love this recorder and have it hooked up to my Samsung tv which has freeview built in so I am able to watch one programme whilst recording another. The only issue I have is that the picture quality when watching freeview via the samsung tv is of better quality than via the recorder, the picture is not ’snowy/fuzzy it’s just not as bright and sharp. Can anyone advise, do I need some sort of connection? My family think I am the ‘techno head’ they don’t know that my info comes from Amazon reviews! so don’t let me down.
Customer Review: How do you watch one programme and record another
I have the recorder connected to a new Sony Bravia KDL-203020 which has its own built-in Freeview box. Can any one, please, give me a step-by-step guide to enable me to record one programme while watching another? The 170 page manual does not cover this most basic of functions. One week later :- I now have the answer. Both TV and DVD recorder have built-in “TV Times” programmes which are constantly updated. Use only the one built-in to the recorder and it will then be possible to watch one programme while recording another. The recorder manual is appalling. It should have a brief “Quick start guide” which is clear and logical.

Customer Review: Great TV
I’ve had this about 6 months and just wanted to say that it’s a great TV. Perhaps I am not a very demanding customer, but to my eye the picture is great and the sound excellent. Excellent connectivity. Perhaps the EPG could be a little more impressive, but other than that it’s a well built, pleasing on the eye (on and off) TV.

Customer Review: Why you shouldn’t buy a large TV online.
The picture quality is good for an LCD TV. Don’t use the factory settings, look online and you will find how it should be set up for home use. There is ‘motion blur’, a slight effect on moving objects or when the camera pans, but that’s common on most LCD sets. Some viewers won’t even notice it. But it’s still quite not up to the old CRT standards of sharpness, especially on moving objects. The sound is not so good. As others have remarked, there is very little bass. I am sure Sony could have engineered better sound quality if they had wanted; small speakers can, surprisingly, give good lower frequencies.

But I can live with that.

What I can’t live with is a vertical red line on screen 5 cm from the left hand side. I notified Amazon, who said to send it back. As they no longer stock this TV, they would give a full refund as it’s only a couple of months old and otherwise as new. A company called HDNL was going to collect it. But that means, at short notice, getting a day off work. For me, that’s not easy, and after some delays I’m going to have to contact Amazon to re-re-arrange collection. I’m now booking a number of days off work. Because of course I’ve also get to get a replacement TV. And do you know what these courier companies are like? I was given a two and a half hour time-slot (fixed by the courier, not me). Great..

Why can’t Amazon send an engineer out to just repair it? I already know it’s the digital tuner in the TV that’s at fault. Well, I think you’ll find all online companies will want you to send back the TV if it develops a fault. And currently (read other reviews) Sony at least don’t seem to be too good on reliability (I’ve bought Sony for 30 years and this is the first of their TV’s to give a problem. Standards falling to keep prices down?).

Anyway, the outcome is , when eventually I get the TV back to Amazon, and get a refund, I’m going to a local TV shop which stocks some superb Panasonic Plasma TVs (still the best). It will mean paying about ?150 more, but I think it’s worth it. A five year guarantee. Service by their own engineer, in your own house. And a loan telly if it comes to that.

And no waiting around for bloody couriers.

Customer Review: Looks like a case for trading standards…
I bought this mp3 player for my mother who wished to use it in her car. Unfortunately, this is listed as having an FM Transmitter when it only has a FM receiver. I sent this product back expecting a replacement to be made but instead I received a refund. This begs me to believe that there is no such model with a transmitter on it!!! Don’t buy this item if you are looking for this feature. Do buy it if this feature is not important to you as it is one of the best mp3 players around.
Customer Review: Great little Audible player!
Contrary to the previous gentleman’s review of this product, I find it quite easy to use with Audible books. Do you want to save your place in the book for next time? Simply power off the device whilst in the middle of the book - no need to pause. I do wish it came with a protective carry pouch.

Customer Review: Difficult to use so give up…..
Bought one of these - used it a bit with initial enthusiasm. Using rechargeable batteries which seem to run out half way through a journey…. Backlighting doesn’t work, hard to access songs and then scroll through them to find what you want. I know IPods much more expensive, but my wifes is fantastic. I was trying to go cheap….not worth it….don’t use it now. Waste of money in my opinion. Do without for a year and buy something decent!
Customer Review: Good for the money
I bought this to accompany me on holiday as my Zen Sleek Photo is my pride and joy and i wouldnt want to break it during my drunkeness. After reading the reviews i bought it and have been making sure it works for the last couple of days now. Quite impressed with it to be honest. I managed 160 songs on it and once a new battery is put in it will last for a good 9 or 10 hours anyway. I choose to have a battery powered one so that i didnt have to trail a cable to Salou and back and to keep the cost down. Adding songs couldnt be easier, plug it in, Windows configures it, drag and drop your songs and thats it. Also the speakers that come with it (while quite tinny sounding and a wee bit uncomfy) are made in such a way that you can hang the player from around your neck. The player ways nothing which helps aswell. Cheap and cheerful. Took me 10 mins to work out how to use it but no complaints there.

Customer Review: LG DR787T ok but
I bought the LG DR787T about six months ago. Best Buy had it sale priced at about $170. They subsequently discontinued it and now it is available again. At the the time I purchased there were a number of open box units on the shelf. I bought a fresh one. This machine is very finicky about the disks you use. The manual recommended Sony DVD+RW disks. They worked for a while, but then no fresh Sony + RW disc would load. Some much for the manuals recommendations. When this unit freezes you do have to unplug it to get it going again. Here is what works: A. Fuji brand 16x DVD-R .These are great. Never had a coaster on this unit or in my computer. B. Office Depot brand 4x DVD-RW . Just bought a ten pack from my local Depot and they are working fine. Pros: Large feature set for a unit priced under $200. Machine works as advertised, when you use “the right” discs. I transferred a number of VHS tapes without problem. Of course these were over the air recordings. It won’t let you copy studio releases. Cons: Forget about using +R or +RW disks. I also tried one Maxell Ram disk. I got zilch. I really hate this trial and error approach. No wonder there were lots of returns. BTW: The AMC -American Movie Channel is running copy protected films on basic cable that are flagged as not recordable by this unit. :( Samsung makes a similar unit (DVD-AR650) that is rated for -R and -RW disks only. Makes one wonder if same doesn’t apply here in spite of being labeled capable of all disc formats. Sony just came out with a machine (RDR-GXD455) with the same feature set , but they have it listed for $250. Ideally, I would like to get a recorder with a built in hard drive ( new $300 Philips DVDR3575H) , but they aren’t making them at the price point I am willing to pay, plus all this second generation gear is just not ready for prime time anyway. Bottom line: Good but finicky. Kinda like some (insert sexist remark here) I’ve dated.
Customer Review: LG DR787T DVD recorder
First experience with a DVD recorder. I’m happy with the performance of the ATSC tuner for over-the-air broadcasts (I know, I’m a caveman). DVD recording and playback is acceptable. There actually are more front panel controls than first glance reveals. Basic play, stop, eject are touch-sensitive controls to the right of the led display that do not light up until you touch the control area. It’s kind of neat once you’re used to it. Problems I’ve experienced are ABYSMAL cd playback. A lot of people put a good deal of money into sound for their entertainment systems. If that’s you, DO NOT count on using this as your primary audio CD player. Lots of skips. Does not appear to be a problem in DVD playback. Also, jpeg rendering from the USB port is not as good as some of the other players (Sony, from what I’ve read).

Customer Review: Great HD LCD - SD & contrast could be better
Had this for a month, it is a great LCD TV, can not fault it in HD, XBOX games look great in 720p or 1080i, as a large PC monitor its stunning even when playing Divx movies, and progresive scan (576p) helps my DVDs (Not HD yet). My main issues are contrast and SD, in low light scenes the image can seem gradiated like 16bit in comparison to a 32bit PC desktop, also standard SD images are lacking definition, though these may be general ‘features’ of large LCD display’s and their low contrast ratio in comparison with Plasma, my BIL has a 42″ Panasonic Plasma so perhaps an unfair comparison.

Customer Review: Simply an amazing piece of technology.
We’ve had this TV for a week now and we simply cannot find a single fault with it. From the clear crisp image to the gigantic screen everything is perfect! Even the price was great (Currys sale ?699 or ?899 with DVD Home Cinema Surround Sound + Glass stand), bargain!

If you’re thinking of buying a HD TV for christmas, or just in general, I totally recommend the Sony Bravia range. The only thing I would suggest is to shop around, you can get this 40″ for a much lower price elsewhere.

But overall, this TV is amazing. Watching HD DVDs and playing my Wii on this is fantastic. Thanks Sony.

Customer Review: Awesome
I bought this from amazon back in october , and it is the market leader.the only reason this is not a 1080p is because sky broadcast in 1080i and will do for the next 10 years.this tv can be upgraded to 1080p via firmware upgrade.

Sky’s 1080i broadcast is suspect , look at sky1 hd channel , its pathetic, but the football hd channels look fantastic on this tv , no motion blur.

3 hdmi ports … fantastic , bravia theatre sync again fantastic , i have a ps3 and sonys all in 1 5.1 surround unit , plug n play with no wires.xbox 360 looks and sounds fantastic.

All i can say is ” this is the market leader the rest play catch up and at this price you wont go wrong.. buy it”.

Customer Review: superb value for money
Yes, this tv is not 1080/full HD, but I love it nonetheless. Blu ray movies look absolutely stunning, and i am very impressed with the freeview picture.

I spend months looking around and chose this model over the W2000 which would have been 1080, because the SD picture is much better on the D3000 in my opinion.

I bought it for 750 and believe me, this is superb value for money.

Customer Review: Good picture quality and easy to use but has recording problems
I was pleased with everything about this DVD until I discovered that mine had a couple of faults (not sure if these are common faults). When recording, it often doesnt switch off after the selected program has finished recording and so it records the next program until it uses up all the disk space, then the disk keeps spinning and gets hot, and you can only stop it by switching it off at the mains. Also there is no way of knowing how much room you have available on the disk and it will accept a recording request when there is not enough room on the disk. I’m afraid to say I will be taking it back.

Customer Review: Waste of money
DVD recorder, built-in Freeview, multi-region - what more could a person ask for? Well how about the ability of the thing to actually work? I’ve had this product for about a year now and during this time it’s done nothing but freeze on me every time I actually wanted to use the thing. In fact most of my time this past year has been spent crawling on all fours round the back of the telly unplugging then plugging in this device just to get it to operate. Well not any longer. Last night the thing packed in altogether. And a good thing too. That means I can now get myself something decent. Hurray! The only positive thing I can say about this product is the endless joy I now derive from bashing it repeatedly with a hammer.
Customer Review: Constant freezes
I have owned this product for one day and my first impressions are that it is rubbish. I have already had numerous crashes and on rebooting from the mains it works for a while and then crashes again.Remote control buttons won’t operate the machine. This has definitely been a bad buy and will be being returned. Avoid like the plague

Customer Review: Its not cheap but …….
Second best decision I ever made was to get a PS3 ( first one was to divorce my whinging first wife !). PS3 is superb, but I wanted a HD telly to go with it.

I had heard of the new X range but was all set to get W range telly, but the day I went to get it I bottled it and didn’t get it. What an escape that was.

Next week, I went to the Sony shop, and they had the above telly, with the RDR-HXD860 DVD player, playing Toy Story 2. The film was not Blu Ray, just normal DVD, and I was amazed at how good the picture was, and that it was not even HD. So that was that got it !

Got the telly home. Do not under estimate just how big this telly is. Its HUGE!.

The picture on the PS3 running at 1080p, is without a doubt mid blowingly good. The detail from just inches away is amazing, and sat in my chair playing games its truly awesome. On the W series the PS3 still had a slight gainy look about it, but with the X running at 1080p that has gone just to leave perfect pictures.

It does a good job of normal analogue TV. I don’t have Sky HD, as we don’t watch much TV, but even that is watchable.

I bought the above DVD player too, as it upscales, and the picture quality with the 2 combined is excellent.

So although expensive, you get what you pay for and I wanted a good picture for the PS3 and my DVD collection. What I got was way beyond my expectation, and even normal standard definition poictures are watchable. If I got Sky HD, then that would be excellent.

I watched Revenge of the Sith, which it upscales to 1080i, and that for non Blu Ray was superb. Light off, some pop corn, its like you were at the cinema. !

Customer Review: Staggering
We treated ourselves to one of these after Christmas, to replace an ageing 32″ CRT.

Connecting it up was pleasantly simple. Two new HDMI devices (Sky HD and a DVD player), worked perfectlythough we haven’t yet worked out how to connect our (previous generation Sony) HD Recorder to it properly via SCART. There’s a helpline number provided with the set which we’ll get round to calling sooner or later.

As with most flatscreens, you have to adjust the default settings to get the best picture. We used a THX setup feature (available on most THX-coded DVDs) to adjust the picture settings. The colour capability is astonishing. THX uses 4 slightly different white patches to help you set the contrast - the Bravia could separate them across the whoile rangeo contrast levels.

The first thing that strikes you when watching is just how large it is. We have enough room that we can sit over 3m from the TV, but it still shocks you at first when a close-up is delivered at greater than life size. Make sure you have space to do it justice…

Once you’ve acclimatised to that, you sit and stare at the detail it’s able to resolve. Even from ordinary TV broadcasts, it lets you see individual hairs on people’s heads, and gives a real sense of depth to the picture. Sky HD broadcasts are even more stunning; you can almost feel the texture of whatever you’re watching.

It’s also a very good TV receiver. Our television reception is dire (I had to chain two aerial boosters to watch terrestrial with the old telly) but the Sony’s freeview digital pictures are noticeably better than regular Sky (though SKY HD tops them both, as you might expect). Even the analogue signal is watchable.

There’s a workable menu system and a classy remote, and the sound is good enough that we only feel the need to use our home cinema setup for movies and live sports.

Oh, and it’s got full 1080p capability, so it will keep up with the eventual winner of the BluRay / HD-DVD showdown. You won’t need to upgrade for a long time.

What does it lack? They could have built in an HD recorder. Given that it has a timer function (so you can set it to pipe the right picture to an external recorder), it would have been fairly cheap to include and a nice touch.

And it can’t solve Sky’s dodgy signal and rather cheeky revelation that you need two aerial feeds to make Sky+ (and by extension Sky HD) work properly. But that’s not the Sony’s problem.

But overall, it thoroughly deserves 5 stars. I expected a lot and have not been disappointed.

Pioneer RCSLX60D 1080p Premium Home Cinema System with DVD/250GB Hard Disk Recorder
in Black
Customer Review: Good value, all rounder with some very minor snags
The Pioneer RCS LX60D is a good choice if you want an all-rounder which doesn’t necessarily excel in any particular area, but it won’t break the bank either. There’s loads of features which you can read on the pioneer website, but not many user reviews so I’m going to concentrate on stuff I’d like to have known when I bought it. The system is basically three components - the Pioneer DVRLX60D (can be purchased separately) and a multi channel receiver/subwoofer (SX-LX60D) and speaker system (SSP LX60D) which can’t be bought separately. Set up was a bit fiddly with the speaker system comprising 6 cube speakers (Front L, Front R, Centre x2, Rear L, Rear R) which can be positioned in traditional surround around the room or fastened together with the supplied brackets as front surround. Pioneer recommend the front surround, avoiding the need to hide wires and perch speakers around the living room, so that’s what I went for. There’s a few miles of speaker cabling to hide behind the unit, although you are provided a tiny little bit of spiral wrap to get you started on cable management… The subwoofer doubles as the digital audio receiver/processor and there’s a separate lcd display unit (it’s the thing sitting on the HD/DVD in the picture) which is connected to the subwoofer by a 1.5 m cable. I put mine under my Panasonic 32LXD700 and it goes nicely. Once the speakers are set up you can set the EQ, channel balance and optimum surround setting with Pioneers MCACC, and the supplied mic. This works really well in my living room, which is a rectangular shape (TV in the corner) and has patio doors/fire surround/curtains either side - in other words plenty of accoustic variables. The front surround is accurate and sounds excellent at low volume as well as high, with the specific Quiet & Midnight settings on the receiver which alter the balance. You can adjust all the settings manually if you need to. There’s a range of audio settings which you can try, but I have always come back to the auto feature which selects the best output depending on whether you are listening to music on the AM-FM radio, a cd or watching a film with DTS, Dolby digital/prologic ii. Connected with HDMI, the upscaled 1080p picture quality on my TV was spectacular, as expected. Not much more to say - it’s up there with the Sony RDRHXD970 and Panasonic DMR-EX87 both with 1080p up-conversion for standard DVDs, although the Panasonic might have been a better choice for the ease of use with Viera link, this system has a host of extras which I thought it worth spending another ?300 on, including the surround system and connectability. This system has 2 remotes - one for the receiver and another for the HDD/DVD (but both have a flip-down bit with some common controls for both). This was a bit annoying and another mark against the system. There’s an analogue and freeview DVB tuner, and a CA slot for paychannels. A dual dvb tuner would have been nice, but I haven’t seen any systems with this spec and 2 tuners. The Gem Guide EPG is good, easy to use, although it does not show the digital radio channels and takes a while to set up (downloading from the analogue tuner ITV channel). If you have a Sky box or external cable system, you can upload the channels to the EPG on the HDD/DVD recorder via a G-Link infra red link. You can then control the recording of your external devices connected to the DVD recorder. The on screen display is simple and easy to use, record programmes or edit from the menu. The blurb says you can save your whole CD collection on the 250GB hard drive - but only if you have 999 tracks. This is a bit disappointing, as the sound quality of the surround system when playing back MP3s (or WMAs only without DRM!!) and CDs is very good. I would have liked to upload a few more tracks onto the HDD - although I can connect my MP3 player either via the optical or analogue audio or there’s a USB link. You can also only see 999 tracks at a time from a PC or MP3 player (hard drive or flash). You CAN get a pre-converted Multiregion version of this system - it’s worth checking other websites . Finally, if you can get this system for under ?700, you are not going to be disappointed with the quality. This is easily the best sounding complete HD/DVD/Surround system I have tried and t
